Abstract
Acute intravenous infusion of N^G-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester(L-NAME) in rats decreases renal excretion of sodium and water in the absence of changes in mesa arterial pressure or renal hemodynamics. The evolution of renal excretory function and circulating vasoactive systems was studied during progressive increases in blood pressure(BP) induced in rats by oral administration of L-NAME(0.6§·/§¢) for 8 weeks. L-NAME induced a stepped elevation(4 weeks; p$lt;0.06, 6 weeks; p$lt;0.01, 8 weeks; p$lt;0.001) in BP levels without changing electrolyte(sodium, potassium and chloride) excretion rate and osmolarity along the study. Furthermore, no changes in plasma concentration of glucose or insulin were observed. In summary, during long-term administration of L-NAME, progressive increase in BP levels were observed without changes in either sodium excretion or enhanced circulating vasoconstrictor activity.
